How to pray the Angelus

The Angelus takes about a minute. It remembers the Annunciation: the angel tells Mary she will be the Mother of God, she says yes, and the Son of God becomes man.

When to pray it

Traditionally three times a day: at 6 in the morning, at noon and at 6 in the evening.

For centuries the church bell rang at those hours, and people stopped what they were doing to pray.

In the Angelus app, Rafi rings the bell at 12:00 PM, and you can change the time.

Step by step

Three versicles, each followed by a Hail Mary, and a closing prayer.

  1. V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

    R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

  2. Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  3. V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.

    R. Be it done unto me according to thy word.

  4. Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  5. V. And the Word was made flesh.

    R. And dwelt among us.

  6. Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  7. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

    R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

  8. Angelus Closing Prayer

Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Alone or together

Alone, you say every line. Together, one person says the V. line and everyone answers with the R. line; the Hail Mary and the closing prayer are prayed by all.

At Easter: the Regina Caeli

From Easter to Pentecost the Angelus isn’t prayed: the Regina Caeli takes its place, at the same times. In 2027 that’s from March 28 to May 16.
